The African Union (AU, or, in its other official languages, UA) is a union consisting of 54 African states. The AU was established on 26 May 2001 in Addis Ababa and launched on 9 July 2002 in South Africa to replace the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). The most important decisions of the AU are made by the Assembly of the African Union, a semi-annual meeting of the heads of state and government of its member states. The AU's secretariat, the African Union Commission, is based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The 26th African Unioun Summit that commenced on January 21, 2016 at the Head Quarters of the African Union in Addis Ababa, emphasizing on Human Rights aspects throughout the continent. The Summit was held with the theme "2016 African Human Rights Year with Special Focus on Women".

It is believed that the declaration of 2016 as the African Year of Human Rights will provide further opportunities to consolidate the gains already made over the years and inculcate a true human rights culture over the continent. Eventhough there happens to be a great challenge in respecting, promoting, and protecting human rights due to different reasons like unfriendly laws, bad governance and corruption the Union must integrate respect for Human Rights. 2016 also marks the 10th anniversary of the oprationalization of the court, African Court, in addition to the 35th Anniversary of the Adaption of African Charter in 1981 and 30th Anniversary of Entry to Force of African Charter into People and Human Rights in 1986. Throughout the year the African court carries out activities proposed within the framework of the resources already allocated to it and through mobilization of voluntary resources from member states. On the gender front the adaptation of the protocol in 2003 marked a significant recognition of the important role women play in socio-economic development of the continent. - By Lula

Addis abeba so busy on AU annual meeting the road so crowds and also closed but the people of Addis abeba just happy b/c AFRICA leaders just make our bright future in "sar bet".
